THE MODAL ‘MUST’: POSITIVE LOGICAL ASSUMPTIONS: meaning and examples

Welcome back, readers! I hope you are having a wonderful week.

We are looking at a 4th use of the modal MUST: POSITIVE LOGICAL ASSUMPTIONS. We use this formula:

MUST have past participle

Example 1: My neighbour got home at midnight. He must have worked late.

Example 2: You must have read a lot for your PhD.

Example 3: Tim graduated in 2015, so he must have gone to school with my son.

This is very similar to yesterday's use of the modal MUST for deductions. The difference is that with POSITIVE LOGICAL ASSUMPTIONS, we are focusing on the past. With deductions, we are focusing more on the present.

That's it for today. Thank you for reading!
