THEME THURSDAY: FAMOUS MOVIE LINES ('AN OFFER HE CAN'T REFUSE'): meaning and examples
Welcome to Thursday's Daily Vitamin and to our second Theme Thursday about Famous Movie Lines! Today we are looking at a classic line from "The Godfather."
"I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."
Vito Corleone tells his son that he's going to threaten people to get what he wants. The people can't refuse, because refusing would make him very, very angry. So basically, his "offer" is not an offer, but a demand.
Notice how he says GONNA and doesn't say GOING TO. This is common in English.
This is one of the most famous movie lines, and is often used jokingly now. But in the movie, it definitely was not something to laugh about!
