THEME THURSDAY: FAMOUS NOVEL OPENINGS ('SLAUGHTER-HOUSE FIVE'): meaning and examples

Hello, everyone! Good morning to you.

Today we continue with our Theme Thursday for November. The theme for this month is famous first lines from novels because November is the Novel Writing Month, where writers are challenged to write a novel in one month.

Today we are looking at the famous first line from Kurt Vonnegut's classic novel, Slaughter-house Five (1969).

Sentence: All of this happened, more or less.

We love this line because it's an original way to begin a novel! After reading this, will the reader think that the narrator is telling the truth? What an interesting way to begin the reader/narrator relationship!

We also love this line because it uses the expression more or less.

Definition: speaking imprecisely; to a certain extent.

Example 1: I liked the movie, more or less.

Example 2
: I leave work at 7 pm each day, more or less.

Have you read Vonnegut? Tell us your thoughts on his novels on our Facebook page!

That's all for today. Thanks for reading the Daily Vitamin every day...more or less!
