THEME THURSDAY: FORMAL vs. INFORMAL BUSINESS EMAILS (PART 3): meaning and examples

Good morning everyone!

Today for Theme Thursday we continue our look at Formal vs. Informal Business English. Today is Part 3 of our lesson about writing emails.

For Part 1, we looked at how to address an email. Click on the link below to review this topic.

For Part 2, we looked at the final sentences of the email, to thank the person we are writing to and to encourage them to reply.

Today we are looking at how to close the email. How you close an email depends on the level of formality of the email.

Here are some more informal closings. These are best used when you know the name of the person you are addressing.

Thanks,
Take care,
Best regards, (semi-formal)
All the best,
Best of luck,
Yours,

Here are some closings that are more formal:

Yours sincerely,
Yours faithfully,
Yours truly,
Sincerely,
Sincerely yours,

These more formal closings are best used when you do NOT know the name of the person you are addressing. Typically, you begin these more formal letters with To Whom it May Concern or Dear Sir or Madam.

Next week, we will look at how to greet people in a business environment. Tune in tomorrow for another three-part phrasal verb.

Have a great day!
