THEME THURSDAY: FORMAL vs. INFORMAL BUSINESS LANGUAGE (GREETINGS)
THEME THURSDAY: FORMAL vs. INFORMAL BUSINESS LANGUAGE (GREETINGS): meaning and examples
Remember that for Theme Thursday, for the month of October, we are looking at business English. For the last three weeks we have looked at writing emails/letters; today we will look at face-to-face greetings, for example in a meeting.
Following are some of the many ways you can great someone professionally. You can always begin with these typical greetings, which will work in any context, really.
Greetings 1: Good morning / afternoon / evening
If you are meeting someone for the first time, you can follow the above greeting with one of these expressions:
Greeting 2: (I am) pleased to meet you
Greeting 3: (It is a) pleasure to meet you
Greeting 4: Nice to meet you
If you know the person, you may use the following:
Greeting 5: Great to see you again; how are you?
Greeting 6: Lovely to see you again; how have you been?
All of these phrases are excellent ways to begin a polite, professional conversation. Remember that we always use these expressions with a handshake, and usually a smile.
Until tomorrow, have a great day!
