THEME THURSDAY: IDIOMS WITH INSECTS (TO GIVE SOMEONE BUTTERFLIES): meaning and examples

Welcome to our second Theme Thursday of the month! For May, we are looking at IDIOMS WITH INSECTS. Last week we looked at being a FLY ON THE WALL. Click on the link below to see that lesson:

Today we are looking at an expression with a much prettier insect: the butterfly (mariposa in Spanish). The expression is to GIVE SOMEONE BUTTERFLIES

Definition: to make someone feel excited or happy, usually because they have romantic feelings towards you.

Example 1: He gives me butterflies every time I see him.

Example 2: Every time she holds my hand, it gives me butterflies

In this sense, this is a very positive and exciting experience. We use a slightly different expression, TO HAVE BUTTERFLIES IN YOUR STOMACH, when we are nervous. Click here for our 2004 lesson on this idiom:

That's all for today. Join us tomorrow for Phrasal Verb Friday! Until then, have a great day.
