THEME THURSDAY: PAYING THE BILL ('TO GO DUTCH'): meaning and examples

Hi everyone, and welcome to Theme Thursday! This month we are looking at expressions for paying the bill, and today we are looking at TO GO DUTCHWhy do we use the word Dutch? The origins of this idiom are unknown, but there are many theories.

There are two definitions for this idiom. We typically use the second definition more often. 

Definition 1
: to split the bill so that each person pays only for his or her part

Definition 2
: to split the bill evenly among all participants

Example 1
: When the bill came, I suggested that we go Dutch. I think my date was surprised!

Example 2
: My parents always pay for dinner when my wife and I join them. Sometimes they will let us go Dutch, but they will never let us pay for the entire bill.
