THEME THURSDAY: WORDS FROM BRANDS (XEROX): meaning and examples

Good morning and happy Thursday, everyone!

For April, our Theme Thursday posts will be about words that come from brands. These are words that are the names of products or companies, but the name slowly became the generic word we use for this product.

Today we are looking at the word XEROX

Company / brand: Xerox Corporation is an American global corporation that sells document solutions and services, and document technology products in more than 160 countries. The company came to prominence in 1959 with the introduction of the Xerox 914, the first plain paper photocopier (a "Xerox machine").

New definition: to make a copy of a document with a copying machine (verb). A copy of a document made by a copying machine (noun)

Example 1: Can you Xerox this for me?

Example 2: I Xeroxed four copies for you.

Example 3: Good morning Alice; here's the Xerox of the contract.

Of course, we can always use the words "copy" or "photocopy" as well, but Xerox is also a common word!

Many languages have these branded words. What are some in your native language(s)? Tell us on our Facebook or Twitter pages.
