THEME THURSDAY: WORDS THAT ARE NOUNS AND VERBS (REJECT): meaning and examples

Welcome back to the DV, everyone! For January's Theme Thursday, we are looking at words that are both nouns and verbs. Today we are looking at the word REJECT. The pronunciation of the word changes depending on which form you use. The meaning also changes.

As a noun, the first syllable is stressed, so REJECT is pronounced RE-ject

Definition 1 (noun): A damaged or faulty object.

Example 1
: The factory makes new products with the rejects

Example 2:
These reject cookies taste just as good as the perfect ones. I'll eat them all.

As a verb, the second syllable is stressed, so REJECT is pronounced re-JECT.

Definition 2 (verb): To refuse to believe, or accept, or consider.

Example 3: He rejected her apology, but then accepted it later.

Example 4: I could never reject a piece of my Nana's pie.

That's all for today; join us tomorrow for Phrasal Verb Friday. See you then!
