Today's expression is: to lay it on thick (informal)
Meaning: used to talk about someone or something in a way that makes them or it seem much better or much worse than they really are; in other words, to exaggerate.
Example 1:
He'd injured his hand slightly, but he was laying it on a bit thick about how painful it was.
Example 2:
They must have told us ten times how wonderful their daughter was - they were really laying it on thick.
