THREE GYM VERBS: meaning and examples

Good morning.

This week we have been talking about fitness and getting in shape. Today we look at three verbs that are specific to the gym.

TO WORK OUT

It means: to do a series of physical exercises in a gym. This expression can also be a noun: a workout.

TO LIFT WEIGHTS

It means: to raise and push heavy objects (weights) repeatedly with your arms or legs for exercise.

TO PUMP IRON

It means
: to exercise with weights in order to build muscle or strength. It has the same meaning as TO LIFT WEIGHTS, but it is more colloquial and is often used by serious weight-lifters (= body-builders).

Example 1
:
Jenney works out at the gym 3 times per week. She does exercises with a personal trainer on one of those days.

Example 2
:
Brad: Hey Greg, can you give me a hand with these weights? Just help me lift them up while I get into position.
Greg
: Sure, Brad. Man, you are pumping some serious* iron!

(*serious = a significant amount)

Have a fantastic day!
