THUD! (ONOMATOPOEIA WORDS)
THUD! (ONOMATOPOEIA WORDS): meaning and examples
Happy Thursday everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you have had a good week so far.
NOTE: Today's lesson will be the last of the week, since tomorrow (Friday) is a bank holiday in Spain.
Today we look at one final pair of onomatopoeia words. These words imitate the sounds they describe, making them fun and useful for adding expression to your English.
Today's 1st onomatopoeia is: Hiss
Meaning Hiss: A sharp, prolonged sound, like air escaping or the sound a snake makes when warning you.
Example 1: My cat let out a loud hiss when my brother's dog got too close to her.
Example 2: She could hear the air hiss as it escaped from the tire of her car.
Meaning Thud: A dull, heavy sound made when something large or solid hits the ground or another surface.
Example 3: Janet dropped the heavy box with a loud thud. Luckily, nothing was broken.
Example 4: I heard a loud thud in the other room, so I ran to see if everything was okay.
👉 THUD! Now it's your turn to practice. I encourage you to write 1 or 2 sentences using one or both of these onomatopoeias. You can post your sentence(s) on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter/X) and we will give you feedback about them as soon as possible.
I hope that you enjoy that rest of your week and your weekend. We'll be back on Monday with expressions for surprise and disbelief.
All the best!
