TO BOTHER: meaning and examples

Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you are having a great day!

Today we are going to look at one meaning of the verb to bother.

Meaning: it's used to indicate that something makes you feel worried or upset (irritated or angry).

The subject of the sentence is the person or thing that bothers and the object of the sentence is the person that is bothered.

Example 1: John's comments about the political situation really bothered me. I don't feel he was very respectful of my opinions.

Example 2: The high temperatures in summer don't bother Catherine. However, the humidity bothers her a lot.

You may remember that this meaning is similar to the meaning of mind. However, with mind Catherine is the subject and with bother Catherine is the object.

Example 3: Catherine doesn't mind the high temperatures in summer, however the humidity bothers her a lot.

If you would like some extra practice with this word, I encourage you to create your own original sentence with bother. You can post your sentence on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter) and we will give you feedback as soon as possible.

Enjoy the rest of your day!
