TO DREAD: meaning and examples
Today we continue with our look at verbs and expressions that we use to express our feelings about a future event, but today's word has a negative meaning.
Today's verb is: TO DREAD
It means: to anticipate a future event with negative feelings of fear or apprehension.
LANGUAGE NOTE: If the verb to dread is followed by another verb, it is in the gerund form (verb -ing).
Example 1:
I dread going to the dentist for my yearly check-up, even though my dentist is actually a very nice guy! But the smells and the sounds of the dental clinic make me feel ill.
Example 2:
He was really dreading his best friend's wedding, since he had to give a speech; he ended up drinking too much beforehand and nobody could understand what he was saying!
