TO MAKE (2): meaning and examples

Today we focus on expressions with make that are related to money.

To make money = to earn money.

Example 1: You can make a lot of money in the stock market, but you have to know what you're doing.

To make a living = to earn enough to buy what you need to live.

Example 2: Since opening the shop she hasn't become rich, but she's making a living and she is very happy.

To make a profit = when a company's earnings are higher than its expenses, for example.

Example 3: If this year's sales go well, we will probably make a profit.

To make a killing (informal) = to earn a lot of money very easily.

Example 4: He has made a killing selling insurance.
