TO MISS-5

Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin.

Today is the last day we will look at uses of the verb to miss. I thought that a nice way to finish would be to include a few idiomatic expressions.

To miss the boat: to fail to take advantage of an opportunity by not acting immediately.

Example 1
We were going to buy a second home in 1999, but we decided against it. We could have made a lot of money with the rise in property values, but we missed the boat; now property is too expensive.

To miss out (phrasal verb): to lose an opportunity to do or have something.

Example 2
I arrived to the party late, so I missed out on all the good food and company. When I arrived, everyone had left and there was no more food!

To never miss a trick (informal): to see every opportunity and take advantage of it.

Example 3
Jack never misses a trick; now he's using his power and influence to begin a special mobile phone network in Europe.
