TO PRACTISE
TO PRACTISE: meaning and examples
This week we have been looking at verbs that are used in English to talk about sport and physical activity. The Spanish (and Catalan) speakers will have noticed that when we talk about doing sport, we DO NOT use the verb TO PRACTISE. Instead we use TO PLAY, TO DO, or TO GO.
Today's verb is: TO PRACTISE*
It means: Perform an activity or exercise repeatedly or regularly in order to improve or maintain one's proficiency; repetition of an activity to improve skill.
*NOTE: British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand English distinguish between "practice" (a noun) and "practise" (a verb). In US English, "practice" is commonly used for both forms; this is also common in Canada.
Example 1:
Wow. Bill really likes playing baseball. He practises Monday through Friday with his team, and then by himself at the weekend.
Example 2:
Russell: Hey Jack. You wanna come play a pick-up game of football with us at the park?
Jack: Sorry. I have to practise with my team today. I have football practice every Monday and Wednesday. Can we play tomorrow?
Russell: Sure. No problem. I'll see you tomorrow at the park.
Example 3:
He practises piano for three hours every day! His dream is to become a concert pianist.
Remember that tomorrow we present the Essential Weekly Vitamin for Spanish-speaking students of English.
Have a pleasant day!
