Meaning: To place a person in a situation where they must respond by speaking or acting in some way.
Example 1:
Wife: Dan! You really put me on the spot back there when you told Kevin about my job interview. You know I don't want to talk about it until I am actually offered the position.
Husband: I'm sorry, honey. I forgot and since Kevin knows the director at the company, I thought he could put in a good word for you.
Example 2:
Marcy felt like she had been put on the spot when Jason asked her for a loan. She doesn't like lending money to friends but she had difficulty saying no to him.
Example 3:
Beth: I hope I didn't put you on the spot when I mentioned your party in front of Martin.
Amy: No, don't worry. It's fine. I was going to invite him anyway.
