Today's expression is: to think on your feet
Meaning: to think about or to improvise your response to a problem or a situation, when there isn't time to carefully consider your response or to respond at a later time.
Example 1:
The presidential candidates really had to think on their feet during the press conference. They weren't given the questions in advance.
Example 2:
Margaret, we expect you to be able to think on your feet during these brainstorming sessions. You'll be getting comments and questions from all of the department heads and it's your job to lead the session.
Example 3:
I didn't think I was much good at thinking on my feet, but when the fire alarm went off, I took charge and got everybody out of the building in an orderly way. I never knew I had it in me*!
*to have it in you = to have a particular quality or attribute.
