TRANS- / BI- (PREFIXES): meaning and examples

Hello everyone and happy Friday! Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin and the last lesson of the week. I hope you have had a good week.

Today's two prefixes are TRANS- and BI-.

Meaning TRANS-: Across or beyond.

Example 1:
He was stopped at the border because he was transporting illegal drugs into the United States.

In example 1, this person is carrying drugs across the border.

Meaning BI-: Two or twice.

Example 2:
Most people in Barcelona are bilingual (they speak two languages), since they speak both Spanish and Catalan; however, many speak other languages too, such as English and French.

Example 3: After his cancer treatment, Pat began to ride his bicycle almost every day and completely transformed his health. His health is better than it has ever been, and he's in great physical shape!

In example 3, Pat rides a bike with two wheels and changed his health beyond what it was before he had cancer.

I encourage you to write some sentences with some words that use these prefixes. You can add the prefix BI- to MONTHLY, LATERAL, PARTISAN and FOCAL and then create a sentence with them. You can do the same with the prefix TRANS- and the root words FUSION, MUTE, PLANT or MISSON. You can post your sentences on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter/X) and we will give you feedback about them ASAP.

I hope you have a great day and an excellent weekend!

All the best!
