UK vs. US: FORTNIGHT vs. TWO WEEKS

Good morning.

Today we look at two more words that are different in standard US and UK English.

Today's word is: Fortnight

Meaning: a period of two weeks.

In standard US English, it is less common to use this expression. Instead, speakers simply use two weeks.

Example 1:
Tony: George. I was wondering if you and your wife would be interested in staying with us at Downing Street for a fortnight in August?
George: A what night?
Tony: A fortnight...you know a period of two weeks.
George: If you meant two weeks, why didn't you just say two weeks?
Tony: I'm sorry George. Would you and your wife like to come to Downing Street to stay with us for two weeks in August?
George: Will you still be in office then?
