VERB TO BE-2

Good morning!

Siguiendo con el verbo TO BE, hoy veremos sus diferentes usos. Utilizamos el verbo TO BE para hablar de características físicas, sensaciones y sentimientos, peso y altura, tamaño y colores.

AGE (edad). Ten en cuenta que en inglés, para expresar la edad se utiliza el verbo TO BE (ser o estar), a diferencia del español, que se hace con el verbo TENER (to have). Nunca decimos "I have twenty years", lo correcto es decir I'm twenty years old o I'm twenty (pero nunca "I'm twenty years"). Fíjate en los siguientes ejemplos:

How old are you? I'm 35 (thirty-five) years old.
How old are you? I'm 35.

CONDITIONS AND FEELINGS (sensaciones y sentimientos). También debes tener en cuenta que el verbo TO BE se utiliza en muchas expresiones en las que en castellano sería TENER (to have). Fíjate en los siguientes casos:

I am hungry – Tengo hambre.
I am thirsty -  Tengo sed.
I am hot – Tengo calor.
I am cold – Tengo frío.
I am tired – Estoy cansado.
I am excited – Estoy animado.
I am happy – Estoy contento.
I am sad – Estoy triste.

HEIGHT AND WEIGHT (altura y peso). aquí el verbo TO BE se mantiene igual que en español (ser/estar) en la mayoría de los casos:

He must be six feet tall. – Debe medir 1,83.
She is the same height as her father. – Es igual de alta que su padre.
Peter is a bit overweight. – Peter está un poco gordo.

SIZE AND COLOUR (tamaño y color). En este caso, el verbo TO BE también se mantiene:

The room is big. – La habitación es grande.
What colour are your eyes? - ¿De qué color son tus ojos?
The dress is long and white. El vestido es largo y blanco.
Maria is short but beautiful. Maria es baja pero guapa.

También se utiliza el verbo TO BE para hablar del tiempo atmosférico, en este caso TO BE suele traducirse por hacer nombre o estar participio:

It's hot - Hace calor
It's cold – Hace frío
It's windy - Hace viento
It's stormy – Hay tormenta
It's cloudy - Está nublado
It's raining – Está lloviendo
It's snowing – Está nevando
It's foggy – Hay niebla.
