VOCABULARY WITH 'FATHER' (FOUNDING FATHER)
VOCABULARY WITH 'FATHER' (FOUNDING FATHER): meaning and examples
Happy Monday to you all! How was your weekend? I hope you're ready for another exciting week of lessons.
In honour of Father's Day in Spain, which is March 19th, this week's theme is Vocabulary with the word FATHER.
We are starting with the phrase: FOUNDING FATHER
Definition: A person who starts or helps to start a movement or institution.
Example 1: Who is known as the founding father of modern medicine?
This can also be used for groups of people and be plural.
Example 2: They have the paintings of my university's founding fathers in the library.
Example 3: Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta are the founding fathers of Indonesia.
This is often used to discuss the men who wrote the United States Declaration of Independence. You may see it capitalized.
Example 4: Thomas Jefferson was one of the United States' Founding Fathers.
The truth is, these days we don't use the term because it only describes men: women can also be founders of institutions. Therefore, we more often use "founding members" or "founders." But you'll still see this term, especially in articles or books discussing US history.
That's it for our first lesson with this new theme! Thank you for reading. We will see you tomorrow!
