WALKING ON THIN ICE: meaning and examples

Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin, everyone! I hope you are having a great day, and an excellent week.

Once again, today we look at two more common metaphors. Don't just study these metaphors, try to work them into your daily English. They will make your English more interesting.

Today's 1st metaphor is: Walking on thin ice

Meaning: This metaphor suggests that someone is in a precarious or risky situation.

Example 1:
After arriving late three days in a row, Jack knew he was walking on thin ice with his boss.

Example 2
She's walking on thin ice by ignoring the project deadlines; one more mistake and she could lose the client, or her job!

Today's 2nd metaphor is: The apple of my (her, his, etc.) eye

Meaning: This metaphor describes someone who is cherished and loved dearly.

Example 3: Her grandson is the apple of her eye; she talks about him all the time.

Example 4: Even though she has five children, little Emma is clearly the apple of her eye.

👉 Now it's your turn to practice. I invite you to write your own sentences with one or both of today's metaphors. You can post your metaphor sentences on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky) and we will give you feedback about them ASAP.

Enjoy the rest of your day. All the best!
