WHOSE / WHO'S: meaning and examples

Hello everyone. Happy Monday. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you had a great weekend!

For the next few lessons, we are going to look at homophones. Homophones are pairs or groups of words that are pronounced the same, even though they are spelled differently.

Today's homophones are: Whose and Who's. They are pronounced exactly the same.

Meaning "whose": We use whose to introduce a relative clause indicating possession by people, animals and things. See the examples below.

Example 1: She works with that guy whose name I can't remember. (The name belongs to the guy.)

Example 2: I have a twenty-three-year-old son whose ambition is to be a professional football coach.

Example 3: This is the book whose title I could not remember. Would you like to borrow it?

Meaning "who's": who's is the contraction of who is or who has.

Example 4: Excuse me, Mike... who's that guy over there? His face looks familiar, but I can't remember his name. (= who is)

Example 5: His name is Jack. He's the guy who's got a mansion in the Bahamas. (= who has)

All the best!
