WOMEN EMPOWERMENT-FOCUSED IDIOMS: SPINSTER
WOMEN EMPOWERMENT-FOCUSED IDIOMS: SPINSTER: meaning and examples
Hello again everyone. I hope you are having a great day.
Yesterday was International Women's Day, so this week we are looking at different words and expressions related to female empowerment. Some of these expressions are not necessarily positive, and may represent ideas and beliefs that women have been fighting to change for years.
Today's expression is: SPINSTER
Definition: a derogatory term to refer to an unmarried woman, typically an older woman, beyond the "usual" age for marriage. This word is old-fashioned and is not used very much in modern times.
Example 1: I can't believe that guy called me a spinster, just because I'm not married. I'm only 26 years old!
Example 2: The view that bachelors and spinsters are in some sense deviant or "residual" groups, is not so common in the 21st Century.
Are there outdated or old-fashioned words to refer to single women or men in your language? What are they? Post your answers on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter).
I hope you have an excellent day!
