WORD OF THE YEAR, 2015 (TEARS OF JOY EMOJI)
WORD OF THE YEAR, 2015 (TEARS OF JOY EMOJI): meaning and examples
Welcome back, everyone!
Today we are continuing our Word-of-the-Year theme with 2015's Word of the Year. But there's a surprise today: 2015's Word of the Year actually wasn't a word: it was an emoji! That's right... the Oxford Dictionary chose a pictograph (commonly called an emoji) in 2015. Specifically, they chose the TEARS OF JOY EMOJI.
Why an emoji? Oxford Dictionary notes that "Emojis (the plural can be either emoji or emojis) have been around since the late 1990s, but 2015 saw their use, and the use of the word emoji, increase hugely." In fact, the TEARS OF JOY EMOJI alone was 20% of all the emojis used in the UK in 2015, and 17% of those in the US. (In 2014, these numbers were 4% and 9%.)
