WORDY WEDNESDAY: 'BURY THE HATCHET': meaning and examples

Hello, and welcome to our midweek lesson! Today's Wordy Wednesday is all about forgiveness. We are looking at the expression TO BURY THE HATCHET.

Definition
: to make peace.

Example 1

Example 3

This expression has an interesting origin. A hatchet is a tool used to cut wood...but it was also used by some cultures, like Native American tribes, as a weapon during war. When they were not in war, the weapons were put away (buried). To BURY THE HATCHET was to put away your weapon because war was over. Sometimes, burying the hatchet would be part of a ceremony to declare peace with another group of people.

That's all for today! As always, thank you for reading!
