WORDY WEDNESDAY: GOOD NEWS AT WORK
WORDY WEDNESDAY: GOOD NEWS AT WORK: meaning and examples
As you know, on Wordy Wednesday we focus on English vocabulary. Today we are looking at the words we use when our situation at work improves (more responsibility, more money, etc.).
Word 1: Promotion (noun)
Meaning: to receive higher pay or a more important position at work.
Example 1: I got a promotion today!
Notice that we typically use GET with PROMOTION. We can also use RECEIVE, which is a little more formal.
Word 2: Raise (noun)
Meaning: to receive higher pay
Example 2: I got a raise last week.
Example 3: I used my raise to buy a new car.
Notice how we also use the verb GET with RAISE. Again, we can also use RECEIVE.
In British English, we more typically speak about a pay RISE instead of a pay RAISE.
Example 4: I received a pay rise last month.
Tomorrow we will continue our Theme Thursday with Business English greetings. We'll talk about how to begin a business meeting with formal introductions.
Until then, have a great day!
