WORDY WEDNESDAY: INTERESTING: meaning and examples
On Wordy Wednesday, The Daily Vitamin focuses on building vocabulary. Today we are looking at a commonly used adjective: interesting. The word interesting is used very often... in fact, it might be overused! Try using some of these suggested synonyms instead.
Synonyms for interesting:
-Fascinating
-Intriguing
-Unusual
-Engaging
-Thought-provoking
-Compelling
-Stimulating
These words are similar to interesting, but of course, not all of these words mean the exact same thing. To better use each adjective, consider the thing you are describing as "interesting." If you think it is interesting because it is unique, then use the words fascinating or unusual.
Example 1:
I watched a documentary about the secret lives of ants. It was very fascinating.
Example 2:
That art exhibit was very unusual. It was all made from recycled products.
If you find something to be interesting because it really made you see things differently, use the words engaging, thought-provoking, compelling, stimulating, or intriguing.
Example 3: The professor's lecture was very engaging. I didn't even look at my text messages once!
Example 4: The last book I read was very thought-provoking.
Example 5: Thinking about all of the solar systems that exist is very intriguing.
Example 6: He made a compelling argument about why you should avoid all processed foods.
Example 7: We had such a stimulating conversation over dinner. My brother is so smart!
Try incorporating some of these words into your daily vocabulary, and it will become more interesting!
