WRITING AND SAYING DATES
WRITING AND SAYING DATES: meaning and examples
Hello again. I hope you are having a good day. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin.
We are going to finish up the week by looking at the way we write and say DATES, which is sometimes different in American and British English.
AMERICAN
Written
October 11 or October 11th
Spoken
October eleventh, October the 11th
As numbers
10/11/2022 (Notice that the month comes first.)
BRITISH
Written
11 October, 11th October, October 11 or October 11th
Spoken
The eleventh of October or October the eleventh.
As numbers
11/10/2022
So, the US dates are generally written and spoken with the month first, while the British generally put the day first (like in Spanish and Catalan). However, there is a lot of variation in spoken English, so the way we say the dates is not strictly American or British; it's just a tendency.
Can you write today's date first as numbers and then written with words? Post your answers on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter) and we will give you feedback as soon as possible.
Have a great day!
