YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! (SURPRISE)
YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! (SURPRISE: meaning and examples
Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin, everyone! Happy Thursday. I hope you are having a good day.
Today we look at two more informal conversational expressions that we use to show surprise or disbelief. Remember... they all have a similar meaning or effect, so just choose two or three and start using them.
Today's 1st expression is: Get out of here!
Meaning: A very informal and colloquial way to express surprise.
I encourage you to listen to the recording of this lesson so that you can here my intonation when using the phrase. We can also use "get out of here" when we want someone to leave, but the intonation is very different.
Example 1: You're going to be on television? Get out of here! Really? That's amazing. Please let me know when it will be.
Today's 2nd expression is: You've got to be kidding me!
Meaning: Used when something seems too surprising to be true.
Example 2: You've got to be kidding me! They've already finished the project? That's great news. I'm going to call the CEO!
👉 Get out of here! You are actually going to write one or two sentences using one or both of these expressions in order to get some extra practice? That's great news! You can post your sentences on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter/X) and we will give you feedback about them ASAP.
I hope the rest of your day goes well.
All the best!
